  • DODGE TRANSMISSIONS ARE THE WORST - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan
    By -

I have place 2 transmissions into this van, These transmissions have a design flaw that allows an internal pin break free. When it does it will bust right through the housing and then you cant even rebuild it. Chrysler knows about this. There is a repair kit that Chrysler offers that will hold that pin in place on a rebuild. I didnt find out about it until I put the third transmission in. has worked great ever since and I gave this van to my father in law to drive over a year ago. Picked up a 96 for the wife to drive . Transmission went in it too. Dont waste your time on Chrysler. this is why their new cars offer a lifetime warranty on drivetrain.

Have had van for 5 years and 107000 miles, to only things that I have done is reg maint. One battery and 2 sets of brakes, 2nd set at 100000 miles. I can fit the whole house in to this van when I go on vacation and still have room for the fam. and still get good MPG, around 20. I didnt buy it for its looks or performance. I bought it for the basic use of a van.

  • My covered wagon - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Even though I had to replace the transmission at about 117K miles, Ive not regretted buying this vehicle at all. It is my pick-up truck with a permanent cover on the back. I can put 10 ft. boards in here and close the back door. Same thing is true with 8x4 plywood which lays flat. The back seats are very rarely in the vehicle as I use it as a truck most of the time. WARNING!! That intermittent dashboard (gauges, ligt, etc.) is NOT a computer problem. The solder connections on the back of the instruments panel are whats causing the problem. I re-soldered mine at about 108K and they have been solid ever since. I love my van/truck/covered wagon!!

  • Should have bought the big warranty! - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Loved the new van at first - until the first transmission went (at only 50k miles). The replacement trans was bad before it even left service! Had probs with sqeaky seats, noisy struts, computer went out at 110k - and the brakes... Brakes dont have nearly enough stopping pwr due (I guess) to poor design. Went thru at least 7 pad changes and 3 sets of rotors in 135k. Lastly, the paint clear coat started disintegrating last year - apparently I wasnt the only one to experience this, just take a close look at the late 90s Green models and Im sure youll see what I mean.

  • High Mileage Winner - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

I purchased my 1998 Sport brand new. I have followed the recommended maintenance per the manual except oil changes every 5,000 miles instead of 7,500. At 225,000 miles, I cant even think of selling this vehicle. It has been 100% reliable. No engine work. No tranny work. A few belts/tensioners, a crossover pipe. Oh yeah, I pull a 2000# camper, no problem.

  • Great van - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

We bought it new in 98, it now has 179k on it with only the normal maintenance. The local Grease Monkey franchise flushed the transmission at 120k and cracked the lines which blew out all the fluid while on a trip to Nashville. Time for a new tranny at my expense as they accepted no blame even though they admitted theyd cracked the lines. Go figure that one. Only complaint is the headlights dont put out a lot of light, otherwise everything has worked since day one. Id recommend the Caravan to anyone.

  • Good if you have children - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan
    By -

This car has been proven to be a reliable van and comfortable for long trips. We have 4 children and travel on short trips in Texas and longer cross country trips about once a year. This vehicle has always been great but at 140000 miles I feel that we need to purchase a newer car if we plan to take a long cross country trip now. The 6 cylinder is adaquate but an 8 cylinder can haul more. The van doesnt have a lot of room left for baggage after after the kids are all in their seats.

  • Dont buy a dodge all wheel drive van - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan
    By -

I have spent thousands in repairs and tows, rentals, etc! I have replaced the serpentine belt (x3?),tensioner- recall- defective x2, tranny x2 (always unstable) recalibrated modules x2, idiot lights on (electrical sensor??)Dodge built this all wheel with their exact 2-wheel tranny from their Chrysler LeBaron CAR!! Not enough strength to last!! Plus underneath sits so low, it rips the belts off every winter in water, snow... and that belt runs everything, another tow! Radio is intermittent, electrical problems with windows also. You have to take apart the whole dash to fix. Cant wait to get a nissan SUV!
